The Shannon L. Martin Foundation was established in memory of Shannon Martin, a wonderful friend, daughter and sister, who the world lost in 2001.

 

Established in 2014 by Shannon’s mother Jeanette, and friends from Study Abroad – Kristin, Daniel and Karrigan – who together serve as the Board of Directors, the mission of the Foundation is to improve the lives of men and women in Golfito, Costa Rica by providing opportunities to learn English and gain job skills.

 In March, 2016, the Foundation launched the Shannon L. Martin English Center in Golfito as a way to honor Shannon while providing services to a community that was so important to her. The goal of the English Center is to increase employability among community members through English instruction so that they may improve their livelihoods.​

​

The Shannon Martin English Center successfully completed its first beginning English class in October 2016. Since then, the English Center continues to increase its impact, offering multiple classes each year to address varying skill levels.
